In-State Tuition: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)

Question: "I am graduating from high school this year.  I am undocumented and I want to go to college right away.  Can I? "

Answer:  You must go to community college first and achieve at least 60 credits.  You also must a) have gone to a Maryland high school for at least three years and graduated in the 2007-2008 school year or after and b) prove that you or your parent filed taxes since you were in high school.

Question: "How do I find a community college?"

Answer: You can contact the Maryland Association of Community Colleges, 60 West Street, Suite 200, Annapolis, MD 21401. Phone: 410.974.8117. To see a list of community colleges in Maryland, click here.

Question: "I graduated high school in the spring of 2009. I would like to work for a little while longer to save up money to go to community college. Can I do that?"

Answer: You have to go to community college not later than 4 years after getting your high school diploma. In this case, it means you would have to register for community college by the fall of 2013 or earlier.

Question: “I graduated from high school in the spring of 2007 and I have been working because I cannot afford college. Am eligible to pay in-state rates?”

Answer: Unfortunately, you do not qualify.  The law applies just to those students who started high school in 2005 or after and received a diploma in the spring of 2008 or after.  Please get involved with CASA de Maryland to continue fighting for just laws to ensure equal access for all!

Question: "My parents didn't file taxes, what can I do?”

Answer: You or your parents must file taxes for the years you were in high school through. Even if they did not file tax returns at the time, they can still file for previous years.  This is called “back taxes.”

Question: “I need assistance in filing my taxes. What can I do?”

Answer: You or your parents can either file online or by mail. You can also get assistance in filing.
