 Montgomery County Organizer (day laborer focus)  

 

CASA de Maryland Synopsis:

CASA de Maryland’s primary mission is to work with the community to improve the quality of life and fight for equal treatment and full access to resources and opportunities for low-income Latinos and their families. CASA works with other low-income immigrant communities, makes its programs and activities available to them, and joins with other organizations to advocate for social, political, and economic justice for all low-income communities.

Department Synopsis:

The Community Organizing and Political Action Department identifies, trains, and organizes community members to create long-term improvements in neighborhoods, jobs, and lives through strategies including communications, collective direct action, and voter education and mobilization.

Position Synopsis:

The Montgomery County Organizer performs a variety of tasks to build power by organizing and developing leaders in Montgomery County among the immigrant community.

All Centers, Based in Silver Spring

Classification:

 Full time, exempt 2

Hours:

Monday through Friday, it may include Saturdays, some weekends, and evening hours

Direct Supervisor:

Montgomery County Lead Organizer

Salary:

$35,000 0 $45,750 plus benefits

 

 

Duties/ Responsibilities:

Duties may include, but are not limited to, some of the following which are discussed and prioritized by the employee and supervisor, and reflected in individual and program annual workplans: 

  • Perform outreach in CASA’s Montgomery County welcome centers and in the general community to recruit members and identify leaders.
  • Coordinate with Lead Organizer, community educators and community liaison to recruit members from targeted areas of Montgomery County

·         Develop, execute, and evaluate campaigns to achieve social change using tactics such as direct action against targets, media exposure, coalition building with faith institutions and others.

  • Perform strategic research, on-line and tactical, to identify targets and create campaign strategy. 
  • Identify leaders to get involved in organizing campaigns through in-depth interviewing, and provide ongoing leadership development training and opportunities in conjunction with Lead Organizer and Montgomery County team.
  • Develop and Staff work groups around strategic issues, and assist leaders in developing local campaigns.
  • Ensure active involvement of Montgomery County membership and leadership committee in state and national campaigns
  • Facilitate organizational meetings, events, and training participation.
  • Represent and facilitate leaders in representing CASA when necessary before the media, legislative bodies and legislators, community meetings, coalitions, and funders.
  • Interpret for community members when necessary to facilitate their involvement in the campaign.
  • Active involvement in the Montgomery County and statewide COPA teams in conducting trainings, supporting local actions, and providing joint leadership opportunities. 
  • Develop and maintain strategic relationships with local and state elected officials, faith leaders, businesses, and other strategic allies and form and staff coalitions as needed to obtain political goals.  
  • Build power through voter registration and education campaigns, ally development, and participation in coalitions or networks as assigned. 
  • Performing database entry and writing regular reports.
  • Support the development and expansion of the membership program. 
  • Meet deadlines established by supervisor and in Department and individual workplan.

·         Participate actively in the annual planning process, including developing and executing individual workplans, evaluating and providing feedback on plans as the year progresses.

  • Think creatively about ways to improve further his/her specific job and CASA as an organization.

·         The work will be assigned to the specific areas of the specified counties according to the workplan.

And other duties assigned by supervisor related to position. 

 

 

Qualifications:

  • Ability to perform all of the duties outlined above.
  • Deep commitment to social change and to growing CASA as a membership organization in which members have decision-making authority. 
  • Minimum of two years experience in political and grassroots organizing.
  • Excellent writing and speaking skills.
  • Strong interpersonal communication, conflict resolution and negotiation skills.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish, French is a plus.
  • Ability to maintain a database and high comfort level with basic computer programs, including Microsoft Word and Excel, and willingness to learn other needed computer programs.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Highly organized and able to manage multiple ongoing projects.
  • Time flexibility - Early morning, late evening, and weekend hours are common.
  • Valid US Driver’s License and own transportation is a must.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends.
  • Experience working with immigrant or low-income communities.
